Warren Buffett once said this about economic downturns: “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.” If you run your business at the top of your game, you won’t have to worry so much about your level of exposure to the economic elements. Tim Northrup, author of Five Hidden Mistakes CEOs Make, and Joseph Cardamone, president of the United States Federation of Small Businesses, offer this sage advice:
Show me the money. Communicate expectations to customers and get paid on time. Consider offering a prepayment discount or incentive.
Tech savvy and cost savvy go hand in hand. Use Web-based accounting software to avoid paying an outside source and try video conferencing to save money by conducting your business meeting without leaving home.
Spruce up your site. A Web address is more important than a physical address. Make sure your website is current and sticky, encouraging viewers to stay awhile by refreshing content daily and going interactive with a blog.
Over-analyze. Examine your customers’ purchasing patterns to determine if you should shorten your inventory holding cycle to reduce costs, innovate by improving your product or service or add to your bottom line by expanding your product offerings.
Who’s in control? Is it you, or is your business running you? Get in control by holding yourself accountable for your objectives. Set benchmarks to evaluate your progress and see if you are zeroing in on your goals.
Let go of solo. Don’t think you are the only person who can do it all. Trust your people and their instincts. Make overall success of your business more important than individual achievement.
Embrace change. Make the acceptance of change part of your business philosophy. Don’t let the people who work for you become change critics or change-resistant. Make change the fabric of your business.
Flex Your Brain Muscles
It’s a common myth that we use only 10 percent of our brains. Actually, we use all of it. But just like your body, you can improve your mental fitness to increase your brain power and keep it healthy as you age.
Perfect your posture. Try solving a problem while slouching versus sitting upright and see how it impacts your mental clarity. Now sit up straight.
Use trapped downtime. Plan ahead with an MP3 or iPod loaded with a good book or advice from a personal-development expert for when you’re stuck in traffic, in line or in a waiting room.
Tell a good story. Sharing experiences in a compelling and fun way sharpens your mental recall.
Mix up your routine. Take a different route to work, or eat your salad after the main course. Changing your typical way of doing things tells your brain to wake up and pay attention.
Write. Writing notes, poetry, stories or in a journal helps your memory, clarifies your thinking and engages your creativity.
Work on your intuition. Every time you follow through on a hunch or listen to your inner dialogue, you are working your intuitive muscle.
Walk. The rhythmic pace of walking gets you breathing and limbered up, creating a physical and mental state conducive for clear thinking.
Laugh. Endorphins released when you laugh lower your stress and can help your long-term health. Ever notice you feel better after a big laugh?
Sometimes we allow the smallest things to hold us back. If you are wanting to earn more income, or see any kind of success, then simply follow some of these exercises above. Prepare To Earn in 2012 with a brand new mindset.
The world is full of people, situations and dilemmas that can push all of our buttons. Instead of losing your head (which only makes matters worse) check yourself with three proven methods for bringing your temper off the broiler.
Don’t Take It Personally. If someone offends you, remember that most of the time it’s not intentional. Remember that guy who cut you off on the drive to work? Guess what: He doesn’t know your name, probably didn’t see you there and definitely didn’t plan to ruin your day—unbeknownst to you. Take the high road and let it go. It’s not worth the anguish, anxiety or repercussions to point out the error of his ways. Besides, that’s what the highway patrol is for.
Maybe it is a Ex wife, or Ex husband that is getting the best of you? Sometimes we think we have to get back at someone by hurting them, when really it is nothing more than hurting people hurt people. LET GO…yes, just let go of that hurt, and turn to God for your support. Letting go isn’t always easy, but it is very rewarding, and the true way to live a successful, peaceful life. Roll over all of your cares and trouble to God, and let him take care of the ex-wife, or ex-husband, or maybe it is a money issue, or job issue. Never the less, let go! The past is the past, start living for what is in front of you, and not what is behind you.
Put Yourself in Timeout. When you’re irate, your hearts beats faster and your blood pressure increases. It may sound cliche, but taking a series of long, deep breaths is like a shot of clarity. It slows the heart, manages stress and improves your mental state. Plus, it puts distance and perspective between the event that set you off and the likelihood of overreacting. Try it—it’s good medicine.
Reach Out. If anger and irritability are serious problems for you, all the insightful tips in the world won’t make a difference. Find an anger-support group, a medical professional or someone to talk to who can help you put your feelings in perspective. There are plenty of healthy ways to deal with anger—pretending you don’t have a problem isn’t one of them.
